At Edinburgh Wire, we rely on readers like you to help us uncover the stories that matter most to Edinburgh, the Lothians, and Scotland. Whether you have a tip about a local council decision, a business development, or a community concern, we want to hear from you. You can reach our newsroom directly at tips@edinburghwire.co.uk, use the function address newsdesk@edinburghwire.co.uk, or contact the press team at press@edinburghwire.co.uk. Every submission is treated with care, and our editors review all incoming material before deciding whether to pursue it further.
What makes a good tip?
A strong tip has clear local relevance and a verifiable basis – it might involve a council decision, a planning application, a transport project, a business move, a crime pattern, or a community event with wider public interest. Edinburgh Wire focuses on how public decisions affect everyday life, so the best tips explain why something matters to readers in Edinburgh or Scotland. Examples include details of a controversial planning approval, evidence of waste in a public contract, or a pattern of safety complaints about a local transport route. We also welcome tips about business developments, housing issues, and stories from the courts or community groups. If it affects the public, it is worth sharing.
How can you reach us?
The quickest way is to email tips@edinburghwire.co.uk. For general newsroom enquiries, use newsdesk@edinburghwire.co.uk. If you work for a public body or a PR agency, please direct press releases and media notices to press@edinburghwire.co.uk. You can also phone the editorial line on +44 20 4587 9485. For written correspondence, our legal address is Level 3, Tower Business Centre, Tower Street, Swatar, Birkirkara BKR 4013, Malta, but we recommend email for speed. We monitor all inboxes during normal working hours and aim to acknowledge receipt within one business day.
What information should you include?
Please provide as much detail as possible: the key facts, dates, names of people or organisations involved, and any supporting documents or evidence. If you have a document, screenshot, photograph, or recording, attach it and briefly explain what it shows. Tell us why you think the story is in the public interest and how it connects to Edinburgh, the Lothians, or Scotland. If you wish to remain anonymous, state that clearly in your message. A short subject line with the topic (e.g. “Council planning – Morningside road closure”) helps us sort your tip quickly. We cannot guarantee a reply to every submission, but we read everything.
How do we verify what you send us?
Our standards desk, led by Diane Forbes (Standards & Fact-Checking Lead), cross-checks every tip against official records, public registers, and direct sources before any story is published. We follow the standards set out in our Sources & Standards policy and our fact-checking policy. Diane and her team may contact you for clarification or to ask for additional evidence. We never publish a tip without human editorial review, and we will not use material we cannot independently corroborate. If you provide a document, we may request permission to verify its authenticity with a third party.
What about confidentiality?
Edinburgh Wire treats all tipsters’ identities and contact details as confidential. You can submit a tip anonymously, but please be aware that the more detail you provide, the easier it is for our editors to assess the story. If you choose to share your identity, we will not pass your personal information to anyone outside the newsroom without your explicit consent. Our privacy policy explains how we handle personal data. If you have specific concerns about confidentiality, contact Diane Forbes directly at diane.forbes@edinburghwire.co.uk or the legal team at legal@edinburghwire.co.uk before submitting sensitive material.
What happens after you submit?
Your tip enters our newsroom system and is reviewed by the relevant editor – for example, Kieran Doherty (Local Politics & Council Editor) for council stories, or Lucy Hartley (Community & Crime Correspondent) for crime and court matters. If the tip looks promising, we may follow up with you for more information. Not every tip becomes a story; we prioritise those that meet our editorial criteria of accuracy, public interest, and local relevance. When a tip leads to publication, we may contact you to let you know, but we cannot promise updates on every case. All tips are kept on file for potential future use.
What you can expect from us
You can expect that every tip is handled with the same professional standards we apply to all our journalism. The editorial team, led by Editor-in-Chief William Ashby, ensures that every story drafted from a tip is reviewed by an editor, fact-checked by Diane Forbes’s desk, and published only after human approval. We never let commercial relationships – including those listed in our ownership and funding page – influence editorial conclusions. Sponsored or commercial content is clearly labelled, and affiliate links are disclosed in line with our advertising and affiliate disclosure policy. If we use AI-assisted tools for research or formatting, that process is governed by our AI and automation policy; no quote, source, or byline is ever generated by a machine.
How do we handle corrections?
If you spot an error in a story that came from a tip, please send details to corrections@edinburghwire.co.uk. Our corrections team, again led by Diane Forbes, reviews every request against the corrections policy. We commit to acknowledging your correction within two working days and, if the error is confirmed, publishing a clear correction and updating the article. If the tip you submitted contained an error, please let us know as soon as possible – we will investigate and correct the record.
