Advertising & Affiliate Disclosure

This page explains how Edinburgh Wire is funded, how we handle advertising and affiliate links, and how we maintain editorial independence. We believe transparency is essential for trust. If you have questions, our commercial team is happy to help.

How is Edinburgh Wire funded?

Edinburgh Wire is funded through display advertising, affiliate links, commercial partnerships, sponsored content, newsletter sponsorships, content licensing and event partnerships. Our parent company is Sliema Media Limited, registered in Malta.

We do not accept government or political party funding. All revenue streams are managed separately from editorial operations. For full details of our ownership and funding structure, see our ownership and funding page. No single source of income dictates our coverage or editorial priorities.

What are affiliate links and how do we use them?

Affiliate links are links to products or services that may earn Edinburgh Wire a small commission if you make a purchase. We use them only where they add value to our reporting, for example in reviews or buying guides.

Every article containing affiliate links carries a clear disclosure near the link or at the top of the piece. The presence of an affiliate link never influences the editorial conclusion, the selection of products covered, or the tone of the review. Our reporters and editors, including Business & Property Correspondent Oscar Friel, make recommendations based on journalistic merit.

How does display advertising work on our site?

Display advertising appears in designated slots on Edinburgh Wire pages. Advertisements are sold through our commercial team and third-party networks. They are clearly separated from editorial content.

We label display ads with “Advertisement” or “Ad” where required. No advertiser has any editorial input or advance access to stories. Editorial staff, under Editor-in-Chief William Ashby, make all publication decisions independently. We do not accept native advertising that mimics editorial tone unless it is explicitly labelled as sponsored content under our separate policy.

How do we guarantee editorial independence from commercial interests?

Commercial relationships never determine editorial conclusions. Our editorial team, led by Editor-in-Chief William Ashby, operates independently. Sponsored content is clearly labelled and produced under a separate policy.

We have a formal firewall between the newsroom and the commercial team. No advertiser, sponsor or partner can influence story selection, placement, headlines or timing. The Standards & Fact-Checking Lead, Diane Forbes, ensures that all commercial material meets the same accuracy and transparency standards as our core journalism. For the rules governing commercial content, read our sponsored content policy.

What you can expect from us

We are committed to clarity, honesty and accountability in all our funding and commercial practices. All sponsored or commercial material is clearly labelled. Affiliate links are disclosed. Our editorial team never accepts payment for coverage.

You will never find undisclosed paid promotion in our news articles. If we cover a business, product or service because it is newsworthy, that decision is made by our editorial team alone. Our editorial policy sets out the standards that apply to every piece we publish.

Who should I contact with advertising or partnership enquiries?

For advertising enquiries, email advertising@edinburghwire.co.uk. For partnership or sponsored content queries, email partnerships@edinburghwire.co.uk. Our commercial team handles all proposals.

We review each request against our commercial guidelines. We do not accept advertising or sponsorships that conflict with our editorial values or that promote misleading claims. If you would like to discuss content licensing, newsletter sponsorships or event partnerships, the same addresses are the best starting point. You can also reach our general enquiries team at info@edinburghwire.co.uk.

Where can I read our full sponsored content policy?

Our full sponsored content policy is available at /sponsored-content-policy/. It details how we label, produce and review commercial content to ensure it meets our editorial standards.

The policy explains the responsibilities of the commercial and editorial teams, the approval process for sponsored articles, and how readers can identify paid material. It also outlines the procedures for handling complaints about sponsored content. We review the policy annually and update it as industry best practices evolve.
