Complaints Procedure

How do I submit a complaint?

You can submit a complaint by emailing complaints@edinburghwire.co.uk. Please include the article URL or headline, the date of publication, a clear description of the issue, and any evidence you have. We aim to acknowledge receipt within two working days.

If your complaint concerns a factual error, we ask that you specify the exact claim you believe is wrong and, where possible, provide a reliable source to support your position. For concerns about editorial standards, tone, or omissions, explain how you think our editorial policy has been breached. You can also raise concerns by post to our registered office: Level 3, Tower Business Centre, Tower Street, Swatar, Birkirkara BKR 4013, Malta.

Who handles complaints?

Our Standards & Fact-Checking Lead, Diane Forbes, manages the initial review of all complaints. She can be reached at diane.forbes@edinburghwire.co.uk or +44 20 4587 9490. Her team logs each complaint, investigates the facts, and coordinates with the relevant editor or reporter.

If the complaint relates to a staff member or a piece that Diane Forbes has directly handled, it will be assigned to another senior editor to avoid any conflict of interest. The aim is to ensure every complaint receives an impartial assessment.

What you can expect from us

Once we receive your complaint, we will acknowledge it, assess its validity, and aim to give you a substantive response within ten working days. More complex matters may take longer; we will keep you informed of progress. Every response will explain what we have found and, if we uphold the complaint, what action we will take.

Our process is designed to be fair and transparent. We will not dismiss complaints without review, and we treat all complainants with respect regardless of the subject matter. We do not charge a fee for handling complaints, and we do not require you to take any legal steps before contacting us.

How do we handle mistakes?

When a complaint reveals a factual error, we correct it promptly and transparently. Our corrections policy explains exactly how we label, date-stamp, and communicate corrections online. We also update the article metadata so that readers can see what changed.

If the error is significant, we may publish a correction notice at the foot of the article or, where appropriate, a standalone note. We do not delete articles solely because they contain errors; we correct them and retain the record. Our editorial policy sets out the standards we hold ourselves to, including the requirement that every piece is reviewed by an editor and fact-checked before publication.

What if I’m not satisfied with the outcome?

If you believe your complaint has not been resolved satisfactorily, you can escalate it to the Editor-in-Chief, William Ashby. Email william.ashby@edinburghwire.co.uk or call +44 20 4587 9485. He will personally review the handling of your case and may commission an independent second review.

William Ashby has final editorial authority at Edinburgh Wire, which is owned and operated by Sliema Media Limited (company number C 84217, registered in Malta). If the matter still cannot be resolved internally, we will advise you on any external options, such as the UK’s press regulator IMPRESS, should we become a member in the future. You are also entitled to refer the matter to the relevant data protection or advertising standards authority if it falls under their remit.
