Corrections Policy

Edinburgh Wire is committed to accuracy in every story we publish. When we get something wrong, we correct it promptly and transparently. This corrections policy explains how we handle errors, how you can report them, and what you can expect from us.

What happens when we make a mistake?

When we identify or are alerted to a factual error in a published article, the standards desk reviews the claim, verifies the correct information, and updates the piece if needed. A correction note is added at the top or bottom of the article explaining what was changed and when.

Material errors – those that change the meaning or factual basis of a story – always receive both an update and a visible correction note. Minor typographical or formatting errors are fixed without a note, at the editor’s discretion. All corrections are logged internally for audit and training purposes.

How do I report an error?

If you spot a mistake, please email corrections@edinburghwire.co.uk with the article URL, a clear description of the error, and the source or evidence supporting the correction. You can also use that address to request a correction or clarification of reporting you believe to be inaccurate.

We aim to acknowledge receipt within two working days and investigate the issue as quickly as possible. For urgent or time-sensitive corrections, you can call the editorial line on +44 20 4587 9485. Please do not send corrections via social media – email ensures your report reaches the right desk.

Who handles corrections at Edinburgh Wire?

Our Standards & Fact-Checking Lead, Diane Forbes, oversees all corrections. She reviews each report, consults the relevant writer and editor, and decides the appropriate action. Diane also maintains our correction log and ensures consistency with our fact-checking policy.

If a correction raises broader editorial concerns – for example, a pattern of errors or a potential breach of standards – it is escalated to Editor-in-Chief William Ashby. He is ultimately responsible for publication decisions and can authorise a full retraction or a more prominent correction if needed. You can reach him at william.ashby@edinburghwire.co.uk or +44 20 4587 9485.

What you can expect from us

We treat every correction request seriously and respond to them all. We clearly mark corrections in articles and, where appropriate, update the headline or summary. We do not delete or rewrite articles without noting what was changed unless the error was minor or the piece has been withdrawn for legal or ethical reasons (in which case we publish a notice).

Our process is grounded in the same principles that guide all our journalism: transparency, accountability, and a commitment to helping readers understand how public decisions affect everyday life in Edinburgh and across Scotland. For more detail on how we verify sources and claims, see our fact-checking policy and editorial policy.

Questions or concerns?

If you have a broader concern about our journalism – beyond a specific factual error – please consult our complaints procedure. For general inquiries, contact our team via our contact page or email info@edinburghwire.co.uk. We value your trust and are always open to feedback that helps us improve.
